About Mecota Trading
Mecota Trading is a coffee exporting company that works with smallholder coffee farmers in Ethiopia, paying them premium prices for their green and parchment coffees.
Established in 2023, Mecota was created with the goal of supporting smallholder coffee farmers by purchasing and consolidating their microlots into lots that are viable for export.
Mecota is eager to work with people who value transparent, traceable trade, and knowing more about those who grow and process the coffee they drink.
As a young company, Mecota’s current aim is to gain secure financing so that they can continue to pay the farmers they work with the best possible prices for their coffee. As for long term goals, Mecota would like to establish their own community washing and drying station in a location that’s central to all of their farmers.
Mecota Trading and coffee farmers
As of 2024, Mecota Trading works with 10 farmers in different regions of Ethiopia. They offer their farmers support during processing, providing information and guidance on techniques to produce specialty quality coffee. In the future, they would like to give farmers pre-financing, so that they can focus on cultivating exceptional coffees without having to worry about money.

The region renowned for its production of high-quality
coffees. Due to its microclimates, high altitudes,
mountain streams, enriched volcanic soils. Historically, it
fell within the redzone, under the control of the FARC.
Now, with the new political dispensation, the area is
now, experiencing a coffee renaissance.
‘Alianza Verde’ Community Coffee
Planadas Tolima, Once a Forgotten
Area
Planadas – Tolima is one of the most isolated coffee
producing regions of Colombia. Located in the Central
Colombia Andes mountains of Tolima, nestling between the
vast Parques Nacionales Naturale Nevado and the Parque
Nacional Natural Cordillera De Los Pichachos.
Because of its isolation there is a limited access… Other than
through the town of Coyaima. The road conditions are at best
a challenge and constantly under repair… On a good day, a
ten-hour road trip from Ibague.
History
For many years, the area was in the conflict zone. Controlled
by the FARC; Known as the red zone… a forgotten region,
leaving the people to their own devices, basically to fend for
themselves. And having to comply with the rules or law's set
down by the FARC. Restricting the selling of their crops. At
best, receiving only commercial prices.
Known as a period of darkness for the farmers. I was first
introduced to the region in 2016. When I was one of the first
non-Colombians to return to the area after the many years of
conflict.
Through this, along with our small team. We have exclusively
dedicated our company’s operations to within this region…
The Region Coffees
The Hamlets of Planadas host over 40,000 family run small
farms. Altitudes ranging from 1650 to 2200 m.a.s.l and
between 1 to 10 hectares each.
Varieties: Typica, Bourbon and Caturra, Castilla, Colombia F8.
And for the most part, sustainable and organically grown. The
area is also renowned for its specialty coffees with exceptional
profiles. With many farms in the region, producing coffees of
excellence.
Our criteria is that coffee over the SAC cupping score of 86 are
classified as specialties.
The Alianza Verde Community cup score ranges between
84.5/85/5 - Because of the regions’ wonderful micro-climates
and growing conditions, produces an excellent profile:
chocolate, smooth caramel, sweet panela and tropic or red
fruits.
The Terra
At this altitude is where the real quality SHB (Strictly hard
bean) is grown. Coffees with a higher density, a slower
development. And because of this, creating a coffee that’s
intense, and full of flavour.
The terra super enriched in volcanic soils. Its many
micro-climates, myriads fresh mountain rivers. All conducive to
producing that special coffee.

The 2022 Christmas Roast: A Blend of Timor Leste & Colombia
For the 2022 Christmas Roast, a blend of Timor Leste & Colombia was chosen. Both farms boasted incredible cupping scores, ranging from Timor Leste's 87.5 to Colombia's high 88.5.
The 2022 Christmas blend is a rich, smooth, and flavourful coffee that invites consumers to sit down, sip, and discover its many tastes. The dominant flavours are chocolate and citrus, but with a subtle hint of pineapple if you look for it. The coffee boasts a velvety mouthfeel, without any tobacco flavour. Upon tasting, you will be immediately struck by the richness of chocolate combined with the bright acidity of citrus fruits.
This blend is a testament to the high cupping score of our Christmas roast, showcasing the complex flavours that can be found in quality coffee. The higher the quality of the coffee, the more complexity it will have, and with an average cupping score of 88, this roast is a prime example of this.
